Angels Fan Survey Results
The Angels enter Wednesday 10 games under .500 and have the 5th worst record in baseball… and it’s only May 8th.
A truly abysmal start to the season prompted me to take the temperature of the Angels fanbase, with some questions on fan’s level of interest in the team, where they place the blame, the future, and other miscellaneous items.
Thank you to all 518 of you who responded.
Let’s get into the results.
On a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), what is your level of interest in the Angels this season?
Is that level of interest lower, about the same, or higher than it was last season?
How many Angels games do you anticipate attending at Angel Stadium this season?
How many Angels games did you typically attend at Angel Stadium each season? (in previous years)
How many Angels games do you anticipate watching on TV or listening to this season?
How many Angels games did you typically watch on TV or listen to? (In previous years)
Fan Interest
The questions above were designed to evaluate Angels fan’s level of interest in the team this season, compared to prior seasons.
Nearly two-thirds of the respondents (64.5%) rated their level of interest in the Angels this season below a 5, on a 1-10 scale.
Over three-quarters of those respondents (75.9%) said their level of interest in the Angels was lower than it was last season. 20% said it was about the same. Only 4.1% said it was higher.
While fan interest level is one thing, I wanted to see how Angels fans disinterest affected their anticipated viewing of the team, both at Angel Stadium and on TV/Radio.
Nearly 35% of respondents said they anticipate attending 0 games at Angel Stadium this season, up from 14% of respondents who said they typically attended 0 games at Angel Stadium each season in previous years.
72.1 of respondents said in previous seasons, they typically watched or listened to 100+ Angels games each year. This year, only 39.1% of respondents anticipate watching or listening to that same amount.
Who is most at fault for the Angels recent failures?
Arte Moreno got more scorn than anyone else in this survey, and Angels fans let him have it in the optional question asking for thoughts on Arte Moreno.
He got called nearly every derogatory term in the book.
Here are a few of the responses that drive home why Angels fans place the blame at Arte Moreno’s feet:
“The issue is he hasn’t invested in the front office, analytics, R&D, minor leagues, coaching, etc. The Angels are very behind on the times.”
“Horrible owner. He brings in over-the-hill star names to sell tickets instead of building the depth needed for winning team. Does not care about winning, does not invest in org-wide infrastructure (minor league, scouting, front office personnel). Responsible for many of the worst FA signings in all of sports. Needs to sell the team. Meddles in decisions big and small which continue to set back the org. What happened? He seemed much different when he first came in as owner.”
“Arte inherited a WS winning team that had the best farm system in baseball ready to blossom. He also drafted one of the GOAT players. But he has effectively destroyed it all. Every Minor league and major League team in this organization is in shambles . I am clueless why he wants to hang around as an owner unless he really enjoys losing, what's the point? His family has not shown any interest in keeping the team so why make us all suffer?”
“One of the worst owners in sports. 100% to blame for all of the Angels issues. Nothing will change until he’s gone. Lifelong fan, and he has murdered my interest in the team. If he never sells the team, Id prefer contraction, even if he’s pushing 80.”
Miscellaneous Questions
How many years until the Angels next make the playoffs?
Only 17.1% of respondents see the Angels making the playoffs in the next three years.
Would you be in favor of a full tear-down rebuild, like the Astros, Cubs, and Orioles have done?
There seems to be a strong level of appetite for rebuilding, among the respondents.
What should the team name be?
Only 5.8% of respondents think that the current name should be the actual team name.
Should the Angels change their current uniforms?
If yes, what uniform should the Angels new uniforms be?
Note: there were also a few optional questions where respondents could add their thoughts on Arte Moreno, Perry Minasian, Ron Washington, and any other items. After sorting through all 300+ of those write-in responses, an analysis of those results will be published.
